Windows 7 Pre-Beta

Posted on September 25, 2008

As we speculated recently, Microsoft has confirmed that those attending two upcoming conferences (PDC and WinHEC) will receive an early beta of Windows 7 for evaluation.

Those conferences will be held the last week of October and the first week of November.

Microsoft thus far has not moved officially from their launch date of sometime in the first half of 2010, though there have been hints from some circles of a late summer 2009 rollout.

Vista’s PR problems seem to be at the forefront of the apparent hurry-up mode Microsoft has seemingly jumped into. Question is are they in too big a hurry to stop the PR bleeding and may possibly find themselves rolling out a product as incomplete as Vista was?

One wonders if they have strayed some from the original intent of this next version in their attempt to put out the fire. We had originally understood that Windows 7 would be a modular platform but the latest indications are that it won’t be a radical departure from Vista. It will feature the same kernel technology and use the same device drivers as Vista.

So now that Vista has been ‘fixed’ with SP1, they could just be gussying up Vista some for this new release, figuring they can put a new name in the marketplace and solve the PR problems, then set about to work at their own pace on Windows 8, the originally intended Windows 7.

Food for thought…..
