Cuil Searching?
Posted on July 28, 2008
A new search engine launched today, its called Cuil (”cool”), and it hopes to prove that its search technology is better than, well……Google.
Unlike Google, which keeps a record (anonymously) of each search conducted by its users, Cuil uses a different search method, according to its parents. Instead of returning results ranked by the number of links that a page has, like Google does, Cuil tries to provide results based on the content of each page, rather than the popularity of a page or site. They say it makes the search method more efficient and allows them to not need to collect personal data on searches. Also, instead of a list of links with short descriptions, Cuil’s results are laid out in columns, similar to a magazine. Cuil’s creators are former Google search experts so they should have learned a thing or two about search engines in their ‘former life’. Jury is out on how well their reincarnation is going to turn out.
For Cuil to have some measure of success, it needs to be able to draw to its site consumers who in the course of an average day have a lot of contact with Google products. That’s going to be very hard when you see all the places Google interacts with the user. It’s not just search but the toolbar, Gmail, Docs, iGoogle, along with other applications which all in some way have a tie-in to the Google search engine.
Cuil has to get past all of that to make much of a mark. The other engines that have been out there for years have not been able to make any headway, instead they are continually losing ground. Cuil will have to be really ‘cool’.
We’ll give it some time to see where they are headed and what they can provide. Not expecting a lot, but you never know where the next innovation will come from — after all, these are people with great credentials. Of course, credentials and enough money will get you a cup of coffee.
