Mapjack

Posted on March 29, 2008

Not long ago, I wrote about Google Street View and the mapping project designed to bring 3D reality to Google Maps. The Goog has been adding a number of larger cities to its list every year. It has been an interesting project, following on the heels of a similar attempt by Amazon, now disbanded.

So, I was interested when I came across a site that was new to me in this same area, called Mapjack. They are doing something very similar but right now just have a small selection of places available. What makes this one interesting is the quality (they let you adjust it with a slider bar). It is so much better than what Google is putting out, it’s almost like being there. I suspect Google is cutting back on the resolution with YouTube and Google Video to save space, since they have so much data already available.

Mapjack is also interesting since they have a split screen with the bottom showing a map with a character in place at the location of the picture in the top half so you always have a perspective of where you are. And they haven’t limited themselves to the streets and highways either. They are taking their show to parks and other places by walking where cars can’t go.

Pretty interesting.

Get ready for a Google buyout.
