Sharepoint or Sites?
Posted on February 28, 2008
There’s a new kid in town and as usual, it’s no surprise that it comes from Google…and no surprise that it’s free.
It’s another example of doing something with what you buy rather than letting it waste away. Jotspot was an acquisition back in 2006 and from that comes a free online competitor to Sharepoint, the good but heady (administration wise) tool from Microsoft. Just another case of online versus local and the question of how much companies are willing to place online, security wise, and how many company tools and resources a firm is willing to expose to the possibility of lost access.
We are currently undertaking installation of redundant fiber connections to our office so we should be practically guaranteed that there will be a live feed from one direction or another…but you never can be 100% sure. There is more than one way to lose access.
The Google apps idea is so appealing and so free (at this point) that a lot of businesses may well give things like Sites a try and Google is betting that if they already have Sharepoint, the ease of use alone and removal of administration woes will boost this latest tool up the ladder.
And it well may.
