Microsoft Open Source

Well, they just pledged to share communication protocols with developers. Isn’t that great news for open source advocates?

Oh, sorry, here’s the fine print. In a nutshell, they won’t sue anyone for using their protocols in developing products UNLESS they try to commercialize what they developed.

Of course, they will be glad to license their patents to developers. Of course, there’s a pretty obvious realization that all that is pretty meaningless as they realize open source using their pieces can never harm them because it won’t have the ad dollars to support giving away products.

So we rule…still.
