64GB Flash

Posted on February 16, 2008

Samsung has started production on a line of 64GB Flash devices. We’re finally ramping up toward the demise of the old Winchester hard drive structure that has cobbled everything from speed to size to reliability over the years of computer history.

These cards will boot a lot faster, lighten up notebooks and other mobile devices, reduce the device footprint, increase shock resistance, lower temperatures, last longer, and in general be one of the main advances to come along in recent years.

We’ve known they were coming but just needed to see some big capacity jumps to make flash units something more than just removable storage to drop a few files on. 64GB is not enough, admittedly no size seems big enough, but a lot of doors open when you throw 64GB on one of these. The next steps upward will no doubt come in bigger chunks of space and the time to get there will become exponentially smaller.

Go solid state!
