Spread the Sheets

Posted on February 15, 2008

Google recently did a pretty cool thing. They came out with a new feature - forms. By combining spreadsheets with bulk e-mail, the new function lets you send mail with fields to fill in. As different recipients do that, the spreadsheet gets completed. So it’s like a real-time survey that moves data straight into a spreadsheet.

Compare that to the way MSFT uses Excel. They make a pint-sized version for Windows Mobile that works like it does on the desktop which is the wrong way to work. Just as a site needs a separate version to work correctly on a mobile, so do apps. With Excel, instead of picking a phone number from a cell and dialing it, I would need to copy to the clipboard, create a contact with that number and then dial. Clunky.
